CRM 331 CORRECTIONS    Election & Policy Paper

The idea of this paper is for you to be an informed voter regarding issues of crime and sentencing/imprisonment. I'm looking for you to do a critical review of information about the positions of the candidates below. The idea of the critical review should come from the early chapters of Welch's book where he explains this idea, and the questions for politicians in the article, What Every American Should Know About Criminal Justice.

Information about the candidates can be found through the table below. Start with the official campaign site, although the national party sites and platforms frequently have more detailed information. The pages of the Washington Post have several options to help you search for material (including video clips and campaign ads), and the Google.com search boxes are at the bottom of this page. Be careful that any additional information comes from the candidate's website and not one of the parody pages put out by a rival.

EXTRA CREDIT: Email each of the candidates the list of questions from the 'What Every American Should Know' article and see what type of response you get. Include a printed copy of your emails to the candidates, a printed copy of any response you get and your thoughts about that response.

George W. Bush

Official Campaign Page

Information from the Washington Post (includes a great deal of background and research on what Bush did about crime as Texas Governor) or the Republican Party

Al Gore

Official Campaign Page

Information from the Washington Post or the Democratic National Committee

Ralph Nader

Official Campaign Page

Information from the Washington Post or the Green Party Platform. (platform is a good source.)

Issues2000 claims to have the positions of all the candidates on all the issues.

Searching the Internet

The internet now has well over 2 billion pages and there are several hundred search engines to help people find information. My personal preference, based on my own use and looking at my webmaster log for this page, is Google. They have the most pages indexed and one of the better ways of matching keywords. The boxes below provide direct access; the safe search box filters out adult content and can be helpful for searches about sexual assault, women in prison, etc.

You do not have to use these if you prefer another search engine. For more information about search engines, how they work, tips for finding what you want on the internet, and various ratings of search engines, check out SearchEngineWatch
